I know it’s a terribly British to mention the weather but what on earth is going on? This has been the worst May I can remember. Today is the first sunny day we’ve had in ages.
Pampering yourself is even more important to beat the bad weather blues. And there’s something so comforting about a good body oil. It’s such an easy way to lift your spirits.
For today’s post I’m going to share details of a body oil I’ve been using for a few months now. I used to love the Soap Co’s body oil but sadly, as they’re no longer operating, I had to move on.
My search for a replacement took longer than expected. I think I’ve finally cracked it. My new go-to is by Balance Me. Specifically the Super Firming Body Oil.
What’s so good about this oil?
Most body oils I’ve tried are too greasy or don’t have enough of a scent. Those that do smell good are often laced with artificial fragrance.
Balance Me’s oil is different. It’s made of macadamia, juniper, bergamot and geranium oils. The geranium is the dominant scent and it’s so uplifting. It reminds me of the smell of my Mum potting up flowers in the garden when I was a child.
The oil is non-greasy and absorbs in very well. A little goes a long way. Balance Me recommends that you use it twice a day after dry body brushing. I don’t do either of those things and I still find it great. I just apply it once a day in the morning on damp skin after a shower.
It leaves skin silky smooth and moisturised all day. Although the scent is still subtle, it lingers just enough so you can still smell it hours later. Because it’s so uplifting, I wouldn’t suggest using this oil at night as it could keep you awake.
What’s in the oil?
The ingredients are 100% natural. Balance Me products do not contain any silicones, sulphates, paragons, phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oils or synthetic colours or fragrances. Hooray 😀!
They are also free of those specific nasties known as TEA, DEA, MIT, CMIT and PEGS.
How about the toning claims?
Balance Me markets this particular oil as a toning and purifying oil that’s good for cellulite. That dimply, so-called orange-peel effect that many of us girls are blessed with.
I’ve never believed that cellulite can be “fixed”. It’s just the way fat lies in females. We’ve just got to live with it and try not to stress about it. This oil won’t magic it away but it certainly won’t do any harm. And moisturised skin always looks better.
This oil is moisturising but there’s another Balance Me body oil that’s specifically aimed at that skin need: the Super Moisturising Body Oil.
That oil’s slightly more expensive than the Super Firming one (£24, instead of £20). I’ve not tried it yet but it sounds lovely with rosehip, neroli and starflower oils. It’s marketed for use on stretch marks e.g. during and after pregnancy.
More about the brand
Balance Me has been around since 2005. It was founded by two sisters, Rebecca and Clare Hopkins. This oil was one of the first products they created. So it’s stood the test of time.
Unsurprisingly, Balance Me is all about balance when it comes to your skin. One of the founders left the city rat race and retrained as a reflexologist. The other is an aromatherapy expert. A great combo.
Balance Me’s products are formulated to deal with a load of skin concerns, without harsh chemicals.
The range is large. From cleansers to moisturisers for face and body and a haircare range too. There are products for all types of skin concern and life stage e.g. teen skin, pregnancy and menopause. There’s even a selection of products to help clear up the dreaded maskne.
All Balance Me’s formulations are blended in Somerset, UK. Ingredients are responsibly sourced and cruelty-free without any animal testing.
While both the Super Firming Body Oil and Super Moisturing Oil are suitable for vegans, not all Balance Me products are vegan-friendly as some contain beeswax and lanolin. Vegan products are clearly labelled.
How about the packaging?
In the last year or so, Balance Me has had a packaging and branding overhaul. Packaging is made from recyclable clear glass or a minimum of 50% PCR (post consumer recycled) plastic.
Packaging for online orders contains bio-degradable chips that can be composted or dissolved in water.
The oil is packaged in a glass bottle with a recyclable plastic (PP) flip cap. It’s slow dispensing without the need for that nasty plastic stopper found in other oils.
The bottle is sold in recyclable FSC-certified cardboard boxes.
Balance Me has its own take on the all important Rs. It champions six of these: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Remove, Replace, Renew. Its aim is to create a closed loop system. For more details about Balance Me’s packaging promises, see here.
So there you have it, an eco-friendly, great smelling body oil to lift your spirits. Why not try it? Your skin (and mind) will thank you.
Have a lovely bank holiday. Hopefully there will be less of this ☔️….
